I was born in a small pueblo in oaxaca, this is where my umbilical cord is buried, so according to tradition i will always return to this place. my mother is a mixtec indian from san miguel el grande and my father was a north american filmaker fromcolorado springs of scottish descent. I went to school in tlaxiaco and st paul minnesota , and to highschool in oaxaca city where I began studying voice at bellas artes and Rowland heights, california. I studied voice and anthropology at the university of minnesota and studied symbolism of the trique textiles woven by women from the trique nation in the mixtec region of oaxaca. I dropped out for a while and began writing songs about mixtec inmigrants who go to the u.s. to work in the fields and the kitchens. I met paul cohen around this time, and we started to write cumbias and other tunes together
Nací en un pequeño pueblo en oaxaca, es ALLI que mi cordón umbilical esTA enterrado, por lo que según la tradición siempre VOY A regresAR a este lugar. Mi madre es una MUJER INDIGENA MIXTECA de san Miguel el grande y mi padre era un cineasta norteamericano DEL ESTADO DE colorado de ascendencia escocesa. Fui a la escuela en tlaxiaco OAXACA Y ST. PAUL minnesota. en LA CUIDAD DE oaxaca EMPEZE A estudiar VOZ EN bellas artes Y en Rowland HEIGHTS, California. Estudié voz y antropología en la universidad de minnesota y estudié el simbolismo de los textiles tejidos por las mujeres de la nación trique en la región de la mixteca, oaxaca. Dejé por un tiempo la sociedad y empezé a escribir canciones acerca de los migrantes mixtecos que van a e.U. a trabajar en los campos y en las cocinas. Me encontre con un payaso/saxofonista llamado paul cohen alrededor de este tiempo, y comenzamos a componer cumbias y otras rolas juntos. Paul siempre oye a coltrane y otros jazzistas y ha sido una constante buscarle el alma a la musica
